The English Premier League is the cradle of European club football. With first-tier clubs such as Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, several clubs can compete for the championship each season.
In the 2016/17 season, Chelsea became champions under the passionate leadership of Italian coach Antonio Conte, one year after Leicester surprised everyone by grabbing their first-ever Premier League title. The last three seasons have been dominated by Manchester City (2017/18 and 2018/ 19) and Liverpool (2019/20) and the odds are that one of these two clubs will win the Premier League this season too. Here are our Premier League predictions for this season’s Premier League title race.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a shaky start to their title defence and have lost key defender Virgil van Dijk for the season. Thankfully, all their traditional major rivals have been underperforming as well. Liverpool won their first top-flight title in 30 years last season and are clearly among the favourites to win the Premier League again in 2021. The Reds were almost unstoppable previous season winning 28 of their 31 matches when they grabbed the title early on in the season.
They broke a lot of records last season, including the fewest number of matches taken to win the title and, the bookies see Liverpool as a key contentender to win the Premier League title race once again. Liverpool acquired Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota in the summer and, barring the loss of van Dijk, are even stronger than last year. Can the Reds win the Premier League title back-to-back in 2021?
Before the season started, Manchester City emerged as clear favourites to win the Premier League. But after a disappointing start of the season, the odds dropped them into second place. However, Man City have the league’s best player Kevin De Bruyne and Pep Guardiola as manager and are motivated to grab their third title in four years and, with Liverpool’s recent woes, have emerged as favourites once again.
Manchester City hope they have finally found a Vincent Kompany replacement as ‘leader’ with the signing of Ruben Dias from Benfica in a £62million deal. The Portugal international centre-back has joined the club and, Pep Guardiola is convinced the club will do better than last season defensively. So far City have continued to concede a lot of goals so whether Guardiola can shore up that defence will define whether they win the title this season.
If you ask Christian Pulisic, Chelsea will win the Premier League this season. The former Dortmund player sees no reason why Chelsea could not win both the Premier League and the Champions League after the club spent over £200million on new signings this summer. Chelsea are the one club who spent the most this summer and it feels like they are playing in a different era compared to their European rivals who did not spend as much because of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Though it is still difficult to buy a Premier League title, you can not spend so much money and not challenge for the league. The experience of the players who stayed combined with the quality of newcomers like Ziyech, Werner, Ben Chilwell and Havetz should push Chelsea into the top three and they could potentially win the Premier League title for the first time since the 2016/2017 season.
Tottenham, Everton or Leicester
According to Harry Redknapp’s analysis, Tottenham can win the title this season. The former Spurs boss believes that Tottenham did well in bringing Gareth Bale back to London and, with other big teams disappointing, he sees them as an outsider to win the Premier League title. Can Tottenham really go all the way and grab their first Premier League title after being runners-up in 2016/2017?
Everton have won the league nine times in their history, the last time being in the 1986/1987 season, only Man United, Liverpool and Arsenal have done better. Everton are the second-longest continuous serving club in English top-flight football and started the season in the lead. Neville Southall predicted that Everton could potentially challenge and even win the Premier League this decade, but can it happen this season?
Teams like Leicester winning the Premier League is not something that happens every year and, it would be a big surprise if they could pull it off again this season. With Jamie Vardy, they have a striker who seems to get better with age and who will likely score around 20 goals this season. Vardy scored a hat-trick in the 2-5 victory at Manchester City showing they mean business and, the team could be considered an outsider for the Premier League title this season.
