West Virginia Sports Betting Handle Down To Start the Year

  • Sports betting handle in January for West Virginia was $50.7 million.
  • This is a 27.7% decrease month on month.
  • Revenue has also decreased slightly month on month.

CHARLESTON, W.V. – The West Virginia sports betting market saw slight decreases in January. The overall sports betting handle is 27.7% less than in December.

The cause for the decline in sports betting activity is unknown. January saw one of the busiest months for sports betting nationwide with players betting on the Super Bowl and NFL Playoffs. WV unfortunately didn’t benefit from this boom.

The year over year numbers has increased, however, with January 2021 being 43.4% higher than January 2020’s sports betting handle.

Slight Decline In West Virginia Sports Betting

The West Virginia sports betting market is still in good form, despite seeing a slight decline in the overall betting handle. The decreases were minimal and the numbers are expected to be higher next month.

According to the revenue report released by the West Virginia Lottery Commission, the total sports betting handle in January was $50.7 million. This is down from the $70.1 million in December.

Mobile betting was responsible for the bulk of the action in the Mountain State was the primary source for most sports betting fans.

More than $32.9 million came from online and mobile sportsbooks. While this is a 23% decrease from the $42.8 million wagered on mobile sportsbooks in December, West Virginia saw a 62.2% increase in mobile betting activity to the $20.3 million wagered in January 2020.

In terms of sports betting revenue, this was understandably also down. Sportsbooks saw $3,976,358, down 38.5% from the 46.5 million in December but up 44.6% year over year. The state collected $337,990 in taxes from sportsbooks.

The revenue numbers are expected to increase in February. The Super Bowl took place on February 7 and was the most wagered on Super Bowl in history.

In addition, NBA betting is in full swing and those preparing for March Madness betting are also preparing for that major sporting event.

Legal sports betting in West Virginia is still a thriving market. There will be months of decreases and increases as that is the nature of the business. The year over year numbers shows that West Virginia is heading in a profitable direction.
