- Max Holloway had a career-best performance last Saturday against Calvin Kattar.
- Conor McGregor is set to take on Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257 on January 23.
- Many MMA fans are now calling to see the McGregor vs. Holloway rematch later this year.
A few days ago, Max “Blessed” Holloway put on one of the best performances in UFC history. Afterward, he declared himself the best boxer in the sport. That didn’t sit well with Conor McGregor, who fancies himself an elite boxer, too. Many now believe that we’ll see the McGregor vs. Holloway rematch taking place later this year.
Conor himself claims this is a fight he is interested in. Max would gladly avenge his loss to “Notorious” from years ago, as well. Today, we will talk about how and when this fight might come together.
Let’s get into it!
Max Holloway Earns Another Title Shot With the Victory Last Weekend
The UFC’s featherweight division is loaded with talent right now. For several years, Max Holloway ruled over the division with an iron fist. His win over Brian Ortega back in December of 2018 earned him the title of “greatest featherweight of all-time” for many fans.
Two losses to Alexander Volkanovski derailed some of the hype that Holloway carried. Despite both fights being extremely close, some felt that he was entering into the twilight of his career. He was then matched up against Calvin Kattar in a fight some felt he would lose.
Max Holloway quickly put any ideas of retirement to bed. He began picking Kattar apart from the outside early and landed massive shots against the cage. Max didn’t slow down and ended up landing the most significant strikes in UFC history against his Bostonian opponent.
After the win, Dana White confirmed that Max had earned another shot at the championship. He won’t be fighting for the belt anytime soon, though. Alex Volkanovski is currently scheduled to defend his title against Brian Ortega in March. Max will need to wait and fight the winner.
Holloway’s performance last Saturday was one of the best in UFC history. Many now once again believe that he is the best featherweight in the world. It will be fascinating to see how he fares against Volkanovski or Ortega, two men he has already faced in the past.
With the title situation busy, Max may look elsewhere for big fights. Could that mean a bout against “Notorious” Conor McGregor in the future?
Don’t be Surprised to See the McGregor vs. Holloway Rematch in 2021
Max Holloway didn’t have an easy road to the featherweight title. He had to win nine-straight fights in the division just to earn a shot at the interim title. It was incredible to see his success, especially considering some of the tough losses he faced earlier in his career.
Back in August of 2013, Max was matched up against the still fairly-unknown Conor McGregor in Boston, Massachusetts. It was an intriguing matchup between two young strikers. In the end, McGregor used his superior ground game to earn the decision over Holloway.
Both men have gone different ways since that fight. That doesn’t mean a second fight between them is out of the question, though. After his win on Saturday, Holloway declared himself the best boxer in the UFC. Conor responded with a simple, yet effective jab.

“He’s definitely in the pipeline for the belt against me for sure,” Conor said. “I would happily rematch Max. And after a performance like that [to beat Calvin Kattar], he’s put himself right up there.”
That’s probably exciting news for Max, who told reporters he would “love” another fight against Conor in the future. The stars are beginning to align for this bout to come together. It seems likely that things would play out slightly differently than they did back in 2013.
Conor has other things to focus on right now. He’s set to make his highly-anticipated return in just a couple of days!

Fans have been calling for Conor’s return for more than a year. The last time he stepped into the cage, he earned a 47-second knockout over Donald Cerrone. He seems more motivated than ever before and many believe he will get a knockout this Saturday, too.
Bovada, one of the world’s best online sportsbooks, is offering some amazing odds on this fight. Conor McGregor comes into this fight as the -315 favorite. Poirier enters this matchup as the +245 underdog.
There is reason to believe Conor will earn the victory. He already holds a win over Poirier dating back to 2014. The Irishman has amazing striking skills and claims he will defeat Dustin within 60 seconds of the fight starting.
