The $75,000 Sunshine Sprint Stakes will run as Race 10 on the Jan. 16 card at Gulfstream Park.
The event for 4-year-olds and up will cover six furlongs and include names like Extravagant Kid, Souper Stonehenge, and Heiressall among the field of nine.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the Sunshine Sprint Stakes.
Betting Preview: Extravagant Kid, Souper Stonehenge
The leading runner coming into this one is DARRS’ Extravagant Kid. The 8-year-old gelding from Kiss the Kid is trained by Brendan P. Walsh.
He has a career record of 14-14-6 from 47 starts and earnings of $967,060. He has one runner-up finish in 2021 from one start.
That 2021 victory came on New Year’s Day in the Janus Stakes at Gulfstream Park, where he registered a 108 Speed Figure. To close out his 2020 season, he finished fourth in the Nov. 7 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) at Keeneland, registering a 115 Speed Figure, and he took second in the Oct. 3 Woodford S. Presented by TVG (G2) at the track.
Extravagant Kid will break from post 5 under jockey Tyler Gaffalione.
His biggest challenge will likely come from Live Oak Plantation’s Souper Stonehenge. The 5-year-old gelding from Speightstown is trained by Mark Casse.
He is 3-3-0 from 10 career starts with earnings of $140,934.
His most recent performance was a runner-up effort in the Nov. 21 Kennedy Road Stakes (G2) at Woodbine, which followed an Oct. 4 allowance optional claiming win at the track. His other performances include a seventh-place run on Aug. 16 and a fourth-place run on Sept. 15 in allowance optional calming events also at Woodbine.
Souper Stonehenge will break from post 4 under rider John Velazquez.
Betting Preview: Heiressall
Another runner to look out for is My Purple Haze Stables’ Heiressall. The 6-year-old mare from Wildcat Heir is trained by Teresa Pompay.
She has a career record of 7-4-2 from 20 starts and earnings of $358,038.
Last time out, she scored the Dec. 12 FTBOA City of Ocala Florida Sire Stakes at Tampa Bay. She also took fifth in the Nov. 14 Millions Distaff Stakes at Gulfstream Park West, first in the Sept. 6 Sheer Drama Stakes at Gulfstream Park, and second in the July 25 Ana T. Stakes also at Gulfstream.
Heiressall will break from post 6 under rider Edgard Zayas.
The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Old Time Revival (Post 1, E. Jaramillo); With Verve (Post 2, P. Lopez); Legal Deal (Post 3, I. Ortiz, Jr.); Cajun Brother (Post 7, M. A. Vasquez); Jackson (Post 8, L. Saez); and Inter Miami (Post 9, J. L. Ortiz).

Extravagant Kid is going to be hard to beat in this one, but don’t count out Souper Stonehenge and Heiressall. Extravagant Kid is one of the top turf sprinters in Kentucky and Florida, and he will be defending his title as he won the 2020 edition of the race by 2 3/4 lengths.
