The Next Opponent for Deontay Wilder Has Just Been Revealed

Deonay Wilder Vs Charles Martin

  • Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury have not competed since February of 2020.
  • The trilogy fight between these two men is unlikely to happen in 2021.
  • New reports are now hinting at the next opponent for Deontay Wilder to face this year.

It’s been almost a year since Deontay Wilder last competed in the boxing ring. On that night, he was handed the first loss of his career in a brutal TKO loss to Tyson Fury. This week, the next opponent for Deontay Wilder was hinted at.

This fight has not yet been made official. It seems likely to take place, though, and would be a great comeback fight for the “Bronze Bomber.” Today, we’ll talk about who is next for the former champion.

Let’s get into it!

The Wilder-Fury Trilogy Fight is Unlikely to Happen Anytime Soon

The heavyweight division in boxing is better right now than it has been in many years. There was a time when many felt that Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury were the two best heavyweight boxers alive. Fans would spend hours debating which man would win if they ever competed.

Finally, in December of 2018, these two men stepped into the ring against one another. It ended up being one of the best fights in years. Fury used his defense and won many of the early rounds. Wilder nearly ended the fight with a massive knockdown in the final round. In the end, it was declared a draw.

A rematch eventually took place in February of 2020. This time, Fury switched up his strategy. He took the fight directly to Wilder. In the 7th round, Deontay’s corner decided to throw in the towel. It was a merciful ending to a one-sided fight.

Many felt that a trilogy fight between these men would need to take place. Unfortunately, it hasn’t managed to come together. Many fans believe Wilder is to blame. He has repeatedly claimed that Tyson cheated in the first bout and seems reluctant to compete against him once again.

That doesn’t mean that Deontay plans to hang up the gloves, though. He’s still just 35 years old and likely has several more huge bouts ahead. We’re now finally beginning to hear who the knockout artist will be facing off against.

Deontay Wilder still has an opportunity to claim a world championship. His next fight is the first step to achieve that goal.

Reports Hint at the Next Opponent for Deontay Wilder

Boxing fans have been extremely disappointing to see the trilogy fight between Wilder and Fury fall apart. These two men have fought in two epic fights already. Everyone wanted to see how Wilder would look with better preparation against the “Gypsy King.”

There’s always a chance that this bout takes place sometime in the future. It’s a huge money grab and would likely be a massive Pay-Per-View seller. Deontay seems to want a few bouts before this one can come together, though.

Reports have now surfaced claiming Charles Martin will end up being the next opponent for Deontay Wilder. Martin is a serious power puncher with a 28-2-1 record inside the ring. He has called Wilder out on several occasions over the past few years.

Shelly Finkel, one of Deontay’s managers, spoke about the plans to the media this week.

“I’m a realist with what I am up against. We have an agreement. Even if we didn’t have an agreement, we gave Fury two shots. He has made more money than he has ever seen. Deontay was very kind to him while he was going through his mental problems. Forget everything else, morally he should give him his shot,” he said. “If we can’t get the Fury fight, Deontay needs to be active. If it’s the worst case scenario, we are going to be prepared to get him back in the ring.”

Charles Martin has won his past three bouts inside the ring. He would serve as a very good test for Deontay. A win could set Wilder up for a huge bout later this year. A loss could spell the end of his career as a professional fighter.

It’s an interesting time for the heavyweight division in boxing. We’ll continue offering more updates on the situation in this weight class over the next few months.

Promoter Claims the Fury-Joshua Fight Has Been Agreed to

After the win over Deontay Wilder back in February, many boxing fans believe that Tyson Fury is now the best heavyweight boxer on the planet. He looked incredible in that bout and showed a new level of punching power. Now, fans around the world are calling for him to take on Anthony Joshua later this year.

It appears this fight will soon take place. Not long ago, Eddie Hearn spoke to the media about the process of getting this fight booked. He claims nearly everything has been agreed to. Now, both men simply need to sign the fight contract.

“The deal is done, really — without being signed,” Hearn said. “The financial elements of the deal are done. We’re talking through the broadcast situation, the only thing really now is to paper it. And when you paper a deal like that, it does go back and forwards 15 times before every single letter is approved on the document.”

This is exactly what everyone wanted to hear. Fury and Wilder are both UK-based fighters with massive followings. Seeing these two men compete would be incredible. BetOnline, one of the best online sportsbooks in the world, is already offering odds on this bout.

Tyson Fury comes in as the -185 favorite. Joshua enters as the +165 underdog. There’s a chance that these odds can change as the fight draws closer. Now might be the perfect time to place your bets on the outcome!
