The Crossword Stumper
A look at one of the entries that fooled solvers in last week’s puzzles.

- Feb. 23, 2021, 1:26 p.m. ET
The last time you played poker, did you get dealt TREYs?
A card with the number “3” on it may be slangily called a TREY. A “3” may also be called a crab, a term that came from the number’s resemblance to pincers. In basketball, TREY may be used to refer to a three-point shot.
Clues for TREY may include references to the “South Park” co-creator and writer TREY Parker or the former ESPN anchor TREY Wingo.
TREY has appeared in the New York Times Crossword 233 times, most recently in Johanna Fenimore’s puzzle on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
How It Might Be Clued
“Deuce topper,” “Long shot, in hoops,” “One before four,” “‘South Park’ writer Parker”
