The Grade I, $400,000 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity will run as Race 9 on the Oct. 3 card at Keeneland.
The event for 2-year-olds will cover 1 1/16 miles and include names like Essential Quality and King Fury among the field of nine.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
Essential Quality, King Fury
One of the top entrants coming into the race is Essential Quality, who will be looking to make owner Godolphin a repeat winner in the event. The Tapit colt is trained by Brad Cox.
He has just one career start and earnings of $55,144.
That one start was a maiden special weight victory Sept. 5 at Churchill Downs, which took place at Kentucky Derby Day at the track. He crossed the wire four lengths ahead going six furlongs and has worked twice at Churchill Downs leading up to the Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity.
Essential Quality will break from post 4 under jockey Luis Saez.
Another impressive runner coming into the race is Fern Circle Stables and Three Chimney Farm’s King Fury. The colt from Curlin is trained by Kenneth McPeek.
He also took his debut during Derby Week, winning by 2 3/4 lengths going 1 1/16 miles. Trainer Kenny McPeek is a two-time Breeders’ Futurity winner.
King Fury will break from post 9 under Corey Lanerie.
Calibrate, Super Stock
Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen will be sending out two entries in the forms of Calibrate and Super Stock.
Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Calibrate is a son of Distorted Humor out of the Dynaformer mare Glamour and Style. He debuted Aug. 15 at Saratoga Race Course, wiring the field and winning by 4 1/2 lengths under Ricardo Santana, Jr.
Claiborne will be joined by the rider again as they break from post 7.
Keith and Marilyn Asmussen and Erv Woolsey’s Super Stock is a son of Dialed In out of the winning Closing Argument mare Super Girlie.
The colt, who was bought for $70,000 at the Keeneland September Sale, scored the Aug. 11 Texas Thoroughbred Futurity by 3 1/2 lengths. He is the only stakes winner among the field and is coming off a third-place effort in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs.
Super Stock will break from post 1 under Tyler Gaffalione.
The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Upstriker (post 2, J Talamo), Notary (post 3, J R Leparoux), Keepmeinmind (post 5, D Cohen), Dixie’s Two Stents (post 6, R Bejarano) and Founder (post 8, J Rosario).
