The curse continues. For the third and perhaps final time, the Chimaev vs. Edwards fight has officially fallen through. It’s extremely disappointing news for MMA fans around the world. Today, we’ll explain exactly what has led to this fallout.
Khamzat Chimaev is considered one of the brightest young prospects in MMA. He’s had an extremely difficult time getting back in the cage, though.
Here’s what we know about this situation.
Khamzat Chimaev is Pulled From Edwards Fight Due to Illness
Every once in a while, a fighter comes along that takes the UFC by storm. It’s happened several times over the years. These fighters are quickly catapulted up their division’s rankings and sometimes find themselves in a championship spot before anyone expected.
Khamzat Chimaev is one of these fighters. He debuted in the UFC back in July of 2020. At that time, he was still completely unknown to the majority of MMA fans. He quickly earned a submission victory and showed a type of dominance on the ground not seen since Khabib Nurmagomedov competed.
Two weeks later, Chimaev stepped into the cage once again. He earned a first-round TKO in this bout and did not have a single strike landed against him. This victory stood out to fans and officials within the UFC began singing his praises.
Most recently, Khamzat earned a one-punch knockout over Gerald Meerschaert this past September. The UFC then quickly booked him into what seemed to be a number-one contender’s matchup against Leon Edwards in December. Unfortunately, Leon was forced out of the bout due to illness.
This bout was then pushed back to January. This time, Chimaev was forced out of the fight due to an illness of his own. Once again, the UFC pushed the fight back to March. News has now confirmed that Chimaev is still not 100% recovered and has been forced out of this fight for the third time.
Fans everywhere are disappointed. Many are curious to see how Khamzat truly matches up against the elite fighters in the welterweight division.
Will the UFC Reschedule the Chimaev vs. Edwards Fight for a Fourth Time?
MMA fans have seen cursed fights before. The most obvious example is the bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. The UFC booked this matchup on five different occasions and every single time, something kept it from taking place.
It’s beginning to look as if the clash between Khamzat Chimaev and Leon Edwards could be the next cursed fight in MMA. Everyone wants to see it take place, yet things continue to prevent it from happening. The UFC now has some figuring out to do.
Rebooking the Chimaev vs. Edwards fight is an option. It’s also possible to throw Leon into a fight sooner while Khamzat recovers. The promotion does not want to see this bout scheduled for a fourth time, only to fall apart once again.
Leon Edwards has plenty of possible opponents on the horizon. Many fans are calling for him to take on Jorge Masvidal. These two famously had a backstage brawl a few years ago and have been feuding on social media ever since.
This time around, the UFC will likely refuse to book Khamzat into a fight unless he confirms he is back to 100%. Once that has been established, they will likely throw him into another fight against a top-5 opponent. Stephen Thompson is one possible option.
There are a million ways this could play out. We’ll be sure to offer more updates on this unusual situation at welterweight over the next few weeks.
There’s Still Time to Bet on Usman vs. Burns!
The Chimaev vs. Edwards fight was expected to determine the next title challenger at 170 pounds. Now, the next title contender is a little unclear. There are several men closing in on a shot at welterweight.
This Saturday, Kamaru Usman will be looking to defend his welterweight title against Gilbert Burns. This was a fight that was originally scheduled to take place in July. Bovada, one of the top US sports betting sites around, is now offering odds on this contest.

Gilbert Burns is extremely dangerous on the feet and on the ground. He also seems extremely confident heading into this bout on Saturday. Bovada still lists him as the +215 underdog, though.
