The Champagne Stakes Preview and Free Betting Pick – Saturday, October 10, 2020

The Grade I, $250,000 Champagne Stakes will run as Race 4 on the Oct. 10 card at Belmont.

The event for 2-year-olds will cover one mile and include names like Jackie’s Warrior and Reinvestment Risk among the field of six.

Here is a look at the top runners set for the Champagne Stakes.

Jackie’s Warrior, Reinvestment Risk

One of the top names among the field is J. Kirk and Judy Robison’s Jackie’s Warrior. The Maclean’s Music colt is trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen.

He is undefeated with a career record of 3-0-0 and earnings of $265,064.

Last time out, he scored the Sept. 7 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, which followed a victory in the Aug. 7 Saratoga Special S. Presented by Miller Lite (G2) at the track. The latter resulted in a 102 Speed Figure.

The colt’s other win was a maiden special weight race June 19 at Churchill Downs.

Jackie’s Warrior will break from post 4 under jockey Joel Rosario.

One of his biggest rivals coming into the race is Klaravich Stables’ Reinvestment Risk. The son of Upstart is trained by Chad Brown.

He is 1-1-0 from two career starts and has earnings of $89,600.

His most-recent run was a second-place effort in the Sept. 7 Runhappy Hopeful Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. His victory came in an Aug. 1 maiden special weight race at the track.

Reinvestment Risk will break from post 5 under Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Midnight Bourbon, Ambivalent

Also among the field is Winchell Thoroughbreds’ Midnight Bourbon. The son of Tiznow is also trained by Steve Asmussen.

He is 1-1-1 from three career starts and has earnings of $69,420.

The colt took second in the Sept. 5 Iroquois S. presented by Ford (G3) last time out, where he registered a career-high 91 Speed Figure. The victory came in an Aug. 22 maiden special weight race at Ellis Park, and the third-place run was in another maiden special weight race July 25 at the track.

Midnight Bourbon will break from the outside post 6 under Jose Ortiz.

Another horse to watch out for is Reddam Racing’s Ambivalent, a Constitution colt trained by Doug O’Neill.

He has four career starts with two seconds and one third, and his earnings are at $42,000.

The colt finished third in the Sept. 7 Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes at Del Mar and fourth in the Aug. 8 Best Pal Stakes (G2) at the track. His runner-up finishes came in a June 21 maiden special weight race at Santa Anita and another at Del Mar on Aug. 29.

Ambivalent will break from post 1 under John Velazquez.

The rest of the field (post, jockey) is set to include: Run Casper Run (post 2, J Lezcano) and Civil War (post 3, K Carmouche).
