The Grade 1, $6,000,000 Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic will run as Race 12 on Nov. 7. It is the highlight race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships at Keeneland.
The event for 3-year-olds and up will cover 1 1/4 miles and include names like Improbable, Tiz the Law, and Maximum Security among the field of 10.
Here is a look at the top runners set for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Betting Preview: Improbable, Tiz the Law
The morning-line favorite coming in at 5/2 is Improbable, owned by WinStar Farm, CHC Inc., and SF Racing. The 4-year-old City Zip colt is trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.
He has a career record of 7-3-0 from 14 starts and earnings of $1,709,520. In 2020, he has three wins and one second from four outings.
The colt is coming off a three-race win streak. He took the Sept. 26 Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, the Aug. 1 Whitney Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, and the June 6 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita. He registered a 120 Speed Figure in his two most recent outings.
Improbable will break from Post 8 under jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.
His biggest challenge will likely come from Sackatoga Stable’s Tiz the Law. The 3-year-old Constitution colt is trained by Barclay Tagg.
He is 6-1-1 from eight starts with earnings of $2,615,300. His 2020 runs include four wins and one second from five outings.
Last time out, he took second in the Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs, which followed a victory in the Aug. 8 Runhappy Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga. He is coming into the Classic off two months of rest.
Tiz the Law will break from Post 2 under rider Manuel Franco.
Betting Preview: Maximum Security
Also among the field is the 7/2 Maximum Security, owned by Gary and Mary West, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. The 4-year-old New Year’s Day colt is trained by Baffert as well.
He is 10-2-0 from 13 career starts with earnings of $12,251,900. In 2020, he has three wins and one second from four outings.
He is coming off a runner-up finish in the Sept. 26 Awesome Again Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, which followed a victory in the Aug. 22 TVG Pacific Classic Stakes (G1) at Del Mar. Some of his other wins include the San Diego Handicap and Saudi Cup.
Maximum Security will have to overcome the outside Post 10 under Luis Saez.
The rest of the field (post, morning line) is set to include:
Tacitus (Post 1, 20/1)
By My Standards (Post 3, 10/1)
Tom’s d’Etat (Post 4, 6/1)
Title Ready (Post 5, 30/1)
Higher Power (Post 6, 20/1)
Global Campaign (Post 7, 20/1)
Authentic (Post 9, 6/1)
Free Betting Pick
Improbable has a good chance at taking this one. He is coming into the race really strong after three straight Grade 1 victories. Tiz the Law, who could be his biggest challenge, is a bit unpredictable since he lost the Derby as the favorite.
