Oregon State and Oregon have played 355 games, the most-contested rivalry in NCAA Division I. If Oregon State senior guard Ethan Thompson starts, he will tie Gary Payton (210) for the most starts in program history.

The Beavers beat then-No. 21 Oregon 75-64 in Eugene on Jan. 23, when the Ducks were playing their first game after a 14-day pause because of coronavirus issues in its program. The Ducks are not ranked in the AP Top 25 but are 25th in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

Oregon On Its Annual Push

Oregon plays a complex variety of zone and man-to-man defenses, a system that can be as difficult to attack as it can be to absorb.

Throw in two program stoppages because of COVID-19, and a preseason injury to point guard Will Richardson that kept him out for 12 games, and it is not difficult to understand the Ducks’ mid-season struggles.

Oregon has won nine of its last 10 games after a two-game home losing streak. It began with the loss to Oregon State and ended with a loss to Washington State, in which Pac-12 player of the year candidate Chris Duarte left early because of an ankle injury.

In coach Dana Altman’s 11 seasons, Oregon is 114-47 in games played after Feb. 1 and 58-20 in games played after March 1.

The Ducks earned control of their Pac-12 destiny Wednesday, when they rallied from a 60-51 deficit with 11:16 remaining to defeat UCLA 82-74 at home. The Ducks used a 15-2 spurt to to ahead, then scored 10 of the next 12 points after the Bruins tied it with four minutes remaining.

Oregon would win the league title by percentage points over USC (21-6, 13-5). The Ducks’ scheduled Jan. 14 game against Arizona State was postponed because of coronavirus issues and never made up.

Ducks’ Duarte Stakes His Claim

Not only is Oregon senior guard Chris Duarte a top candidate with USC’s Evan Mosley for the Pac-12 player of the year, he is one of the five finalists for the Jerry West Award, given annually to the best shooting guard in the country.

Duarte, 6-foot-5, is averaging 17.7 points and 1.9 steals while shooting 53.8% from the floor. He is one of only three NCAA Division I players to reach those totals this season. He leads the Pac-12 with 53 3-pointers and is shooting 43.4% from distance, 14th in Division I.

Gonzaga’s Joel Ayayi, Houston’s Quentin Grimes, Baylor’s MaCio Teague and Iowa’s Joe Wieskamp are the other West Award finalists.

Oregon will put the ball in Duarte’s hands down the stretch.

Oregon State Likes This Series

Oregon State has been favored once in the last eight meetings with Oregon, but that has not stopped the Beavers from winning four of the last five in the series. The Ducks also have lost four of the last five in Corvallis, only once as an underdog.

The Beavers’ 75-64 win at Oregon on Jan. 23 was their first true road win over a Top 25 team since a 52-45 victory over No. 15 Washington on Jan. 5, 1985.

Thompson had 19 points in that game and Nicholls State transfer Warith Alatishe had 14 points and 16 rebounds. Thompson is averaging a team-high 15.5 points and 4.0 assists per game. Alatishe has 11 double-figure rebounding games and is averaging 3.2 offensive rebounds per game, both tops in the league.

Back on Track

Oregon is 9-2 since point guard Will Richardson returned from preseason thumb surgery, and his presence is among the reasons the Ducks are averaging only 10.7 turnovers per game. (Oregon State averages 11.3) The Ducks also lead the Pac-12 with 7.6 steals per game.

Richardson is averaging 10.0 points and 3.0 assists per game and had 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting (5-of-10 from three-point range) in the previous two games, victories over Arizona and UCLA.

The Ducks have held six opponents to below 40% shooting from the field this season, including three of the last six.

It is difficult to go against Oregon State in this series but impossible to go against Oregon, especially with the Pac-12 title and No. 1 seed in the league tournament at stake.

The pick: Oregon -5 (110)
