Usually the ACC is not the center of the college football universe, but with Virginia Tech versus North Carolina and Clemson versus Miami it will take a backseat to no one. The 19th ranked Hokies will visit Chapel Hill to take on the 8th ranked Tar Heels, with both teams looking to move to 3-0.
Virginia Tech is coming off a 38-31 victory at Duke. North Carolina barely escaped at Boston College 26-22.
Hokies Doing it on the Ground
The Hokies are not going to hide what they do on offense. They want to run, run, and then run some more. Virginia Tech has rushed for over 300 yards in each of their first two games.
Quarterback Braxon Burmeister is going to have to get better if Virginia Tech wants to make a run at an ACC title. He is 16-for-36 for 269 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The run game is led by Khalil Herbert who has gained 312 yards on 26 carries with three touchdowns.
The Hokies defense has struggled early on, especially against the pass. Opponents are averaging 27.5 points and 398 yards of total offense per game.
Tar Heels Look for Revenge
Last year’s Virginia Tech versus North Carolina was one of the best of the year, but the Tar Heels came out on the wrong end of the six overtime thriller 43-41. The Tar Heels can put themselves in a great spot for a shot at the ACC crown with the victory moving them into a tie with the winner of the Miami/Clemson game, and most likely Notre Dame for first place.
Sam Howell has been turnover prone for North Carolina. He is 39-of-60 for 520 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. Dyami Brown has been his favorite target with 10 catches for 154 yards.
This game is going to come down to the Hokies’ run game against the Tar Heels run defense. North Carolina are the number one ranked team against the run and will face off against the nations’ top runner in Herert. North Carolina held Boston College to only 40 yards rushing last week.

This game will be old school college football. Both teams are run first, and they both do it well. I think the Tar Heels emerge with the victory but I think the best play here is the under 60. Both teams will run and chew clock leaving those who bet the under a little heavier in the pocketbook. Virginia Tech 21, North Carolina 27
