Floyd Mayweather is considered by many to be the greatest boxers of all time. His time as a legitimate champion is over, yet he appears willing to take exhibition matches from time to time. Reports are now surfacing that Mayweather vs. Logan Paul is taking place sometime this year.
Paul took his first professional boxing match back in November of 2019. The Youtube celebrity has hinted that he’ll be back in the ring sometime soon. No one could have predicted he’d be taking on the sport’s GOAT.
Let’s take a look at how this fight is coming together.
Celebrity Boxing Matches Are Growing in Popularity
The sport of boxing is evolving. Many feel that we’re now in a golden age for the sport. Each weight class features world-class fighters and Pay-Per-View superstars. Several exciting bouts are still scheduled to take place in 2020.
One of the more unusual changes to the sport has been the surge in celebrity boxing matches. These have always taken place in the past. Until fairly recently, however, these celebrity fights were always taking place under the radar.
Back in 2018, Logan Paul and several other YouTubers competed in an amateur boxing event. To the surprise of many fans, this event drew in a huge number of viewers from around the world. Not long after the event, Logan Paul announced he planned to fight again.
He stayed true to his word. Logan Paul competed against KSI for the second time in November of 2019. Logan’s brother Jake then fought in another high-profile fight just a few months later. It’s now clear that these celebrity bouts are here to stay, with Jake Paul scheduled to fight Nate Robinson later this year.
Many hardcore boxing fans have an issue with these fights growing so popular. They feel it takes away from the true integrity of the sport. Others believe these fights help to bring boxing more exposure.
It now appears we’re going to see a sort of crossover fight between one of the world’s best boxers and a real Youtube star.
Reports Claim Mayweather vs. Logan Paul is Happening Soon
For nearly two decades, Floyd Mayweather ruled boxing’s lower weight divisions. He defeated some of the greatest fighters of this generation including Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, and Canelo Alvarez. After a win over Conor McGregor in 2017, Floyd retired from the sport with a perfect 50-0 record.
His time away from boxing didn’t last long. In September of 2018, Mayweather took an exhibition match against the Japanese superstar, Tenshin Nasukawa. It took Floyd less than one round to earn the TKO victory over his opponent.
Floyd Mayweather is now 43 years old. He’s not going to step back into the ring against a true welterweight champion. He does appear open to taking more of these novelty, exhibition fights against big names.
News has just surfaced that Mayweather vs. Logan Paul is taking place sometime this year. Paul called out Floyd earlier this year. Mayweather quickly gave a verbal agreement to the fight. It’s now been confirmed that Mayweather has signed the fight contract.
Sports analysts Pat McAfee spoke about this situation on his podcast today.
“I don’t understand the fight. Logan Paul has tried his hand at professional boxing — couldn’t the other nobody [that] nobody’s ever heard of before. [Paul’s] now zero and one,” he said. “He’s going to be fighting one of the best in Floyd Mayweather. It’s going to be a joke of a fight, but it’s signed. It’s official. I heard it from a reputable source today and even saw the signed picture of the signed contract where Floyd signed on the dotted line for this exhibition match.”
This isn’t a fight that means anything for the sport of boxing. It’s guaranteed to draw in a huge number of viewers, though. An official date for this bout has not yet been announced. Incredibly, early odds list Floyd as the 33/1 favorite to get the win. Stay tuned for more updates over the next few weeks!
Here Are Some Boxing Odds You Need to Check Out!
Back in March, the sport of boxing was forced to shut down. It wasn’t until June that boxing events began to resume. These events are now taking place on a regular basis and are drawing in impressive viewership numbers.
As we mentioned earlier, there are some major boxing fights still scheduled to take place in 2020. Bovada, one of the best online sports betting sites in the US, is now offering odds on these fights. One that many are looking forward to is the title fight between Vasyl Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez.
Lomachenko can easily be called the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world right now. He holds several major titles and has some of the best footwork in the history of boxing. Bovada lists Vasyl as the -360 favorite to get the win over Lopez.
Teofimo Lopez may be the toughest test of Loma’s professional career. He’s just 23 years old, yet already has an incredible 15-0 record. It would be a monumental upset, yet Lopez comes into this fight as the +270 underdog.
Official odds on Mayweather vs. Logan Paul are likely to become available soon. As we mentioned earlier, Floyd was initially listed as the 33/1 favorite. It will be interesting to see how these odds change once officially available from sportsbooks.
