Until three matches ago, Anfield was a fortress for Liverpool, with The Reds unbeaten in 68 matches at the famous ground. Then Burnley arrived and shattered the intimidation factor surrounding Anfield for away teams, with the 2019/20 champions losing three consecutive home games since. It proves that anything can happen in football at the moment, a notion that applies to Fantasy Football too. It’s never to late to bring in a new player or play your wildcard, and it’s certainly never too late to change your captaincy. Hopefully the following Fantasy Premier League captain picks will prove to be worthwhile tips for managers.
Fantasy Premier League captain picks and tips
Ilkay Gundogan (vs Tottenham, Everton)
Not having a Manchester City player captained or vice-captained in Gameweek 24 is incredibly brave, or stupid. Pep Guardiola’s men have a double gameweek this week which, of course, means potentially twice as many points on offer. The recent 4-1 thumping of Liverpool will give the Cityzens plenty to be positive about, especially with the continued good form of Ilkay Gundogan.
The German scored twice against Liverpool, could have had a hat-trick had he not smashed his penalty into row Z and was a constant pest for the two makeshift-defenders of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson. The former Dortmund man has been Guardiola’s saviour in the absence of creative star man Kevin De Bruyne, popping up with plenty of goals and assists, as well as being crucial in the build-up for other goals.
His eye for a pass and constant movement in and around the box makes him very difficult to mark, dragging players out of position and opening up pockets of space for other players to run into. The 30-year-old has scored nine so far this campaign, and matches against a shaky Spurs team and a hit-or-miss Everton team is the perfect opportunity to hit double figures for the season.
Spurs battled to a 2-0 victory over West Brom last weekend, with the swift return of Harry Kane catching FPL managers off-guard as most expected him to be absent from the starting eleven for longer. However, their defence is weak and they could be exposed by the inform City attack. As for Everton, their last-gasp equaliser at Old Trafford was a great point for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, but they have struggled to sustain form recently and that will continue in Gameweek 24.
Bruno Fernandes (vs West Brom)
Almost 60% of Fantasy Football managers have invested £11m to have Bruno Fernandes in their respective teams, and if he continues his consistently good form then that figure could even rise further. The Portuguese midfielder scored a screamer in Gameweek 23, whipping a fierce strike into the top corner against Everton, and will be hoping to at least grab another this weekend. Fernandes has averaged 7.35 points per game this season, so he is impossible to leave out of this week’s Fantasy Premier League captain picks and tips.
The former Sporting CP captain is slowly asserting himself as one of the best creative midfielders in the league, arguably second-best only to Kevin De Bruyne. He glides across the frontline and is near-impossible to man-mark, being given the freedom to drift to wherever he wishes to get on the ball. The 26-year-old can create chances out of nothing as well as score goals, which is the type of midfielder that Manchester United have been in desperate need of for years. This week United take on West Brom, in a game that should really be one-way traffic.
The Baggies are without a win in five and the hope of survival injected into the club when manager Sam Allardyce was appointed has certainly worn off. The West Midlands club are in free fall. The Hawthorn Stadium outfit are able to grind out draws against weaker opposition, but they should really struggle to cope with the likes of Edison Cavani, Marcus Rashford and Fernandes having possession around their penalty area. It is hard not to imagine the Red Devils being victorious in this match, which is why Fernandes must be considered for the captain’s armband.
Eberechi Eze (vs Burnley)
Crystal Palace found some winning form until their defeat to Leeds on Monday night. Prior to that, their tight 1-0 win over Wolves followed by a crushing 2-1 defeat of Newcastle had put them in good spirits. Next up they take on another team who are in and around the relegation battle, Burnley, and Roy Hodgson’s team will be hoping to bounce back with another three points. One player in particular that has been influential in the Eagles’ good run is Eberechi Eze, which is why he is one of this week’s Fantasy Premier League captain picks and tips
The creative midfielder has settled in to life in the top-flight seamlessly, scoring and assisting three apiece in 20 appearances. The two defensive midfielders of Palace means that the 22-year-old is given the license to roam in the heart of the attack, with there being little expectation for him to drop deep. The Englishman has immense dribbling ability, an accolade of skills and tricks to beat his man and can also finish chances, which has made his £15m price tag look very cheap.
This weekend, Eze’s side will face Burnley, who are desperate for results. The Clarets put in a great performance against Brighton in Gameweek 23 and their second-half display could have won them all three points. However, Sean Dyche’s men are so inconsistent that they are unlikely to build on that. Burnley currently occupy 17th position in the table, just eight points above the relegation zone, so will need a win at Selhurst Park. If the home side grab an early goal then it could force the relegation-battling team into chasing the game, which would be the ideal circumstances for Eze to flourish in.
Lewis Dunk (vs Aston Villa)
At last Brighton have begun to earn the results that represent their performances. The Seagulls picked up two crucial 1-0 wins against Liverpool and Spurs in the space of five days before drawing with Burnley at the weekend, in what appeared quite a tired display.
But Graham Potter’s team have had a fair amount of time to rest heading into Gameweek 24, assuming they don’t go all guns blazing in the FA Cup on Wednesday night, so could pose a real challenge for Aston Villa. One man that has been scoring big FPL points recently is Brighton captain Lewis Dunk, so he must be considered in this week’s Fantasy Premier League captain picks.
The defender has been at the heart of Brighton’s good run of form, making crucial blocks and winning important headers. The centre-back is irreplaceable in the eyes of many Seagulls supporters, and his recent performances make it hard to argue otherwise. The 29-year-old’s glancing header against Burnley was a great example of the capabilities of the Englishman in the air, as well as containing the feisty and physical strike partnership of Ashley Barnes and Matej Vydra. Brighton have kept clean sheets in four of their last five matches, and they will be hoping that good defensive form continues at the Amex Stadium on Saturday night.
Their opposition, Aston Villa, have encapsulated inconsistency in their last six games, losing then winning then losing then winning, etc. You get the point. So, if they continue this ‘on and off’ form then a loss is on the cards for Dean Smith’s team. The Villains seem to crumble out of possession and struggle against counter-attacking football, which is where Brighton have a lot of their joy.
