After surviving a three-month, pandemic-induced closure in the latter half of 2020, Doughnut Plant is pushing its business model forward. And once again, expanding overseas.
The Riyadh, Saudi Arabia locale marks the eighth iteration for the Lower East Side born empire (if you count the Japan outpost), and the first for the Middle East. And there seems to be demand for the doughnuts all over the map; their Instagram announcement reads like a rock band’s post in the comments. Others make valid quips: “Saudi Arabia, how about right next door in NJ???”
Meanwhile, the Hotel Chelsea location has been shuttered since March of last year.
Doughnut Plant is a Lower East Side success story. Owner Mark Israel founded the company in his Essex Street apartment in 1994. He started by selling his baked goods to Dean & Deluca and Balducci’s. The neighborhood brick-and-mortar at 379 Grand Street followed in 2000; a decade later it annexed the space next door.
