Wyoming Valley

ICE4U2C, an ice castle viewing event, will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, at Damenti’s Restaurant, 5 Bowman’s Mill Road, West Hazleton. The event marks the 35th anniversary of the first ice castle event at the area restaurant. ICE4U2C will donate 50% of all proceeds to charity. Thirty five years ago, the owner of Damenti’s made a small ice castle for his daughter, Lauren’s, birthday. This year, the restaurant will build three different miniature ice bar castles. Three enclosed gazebos will serve as the location of each ice bar castle.

Mount Moriah Charge will host Ash Wednesday services at 11:30 a.m. at Oakdale Methodist Church, 485 Oakdale Drive, Hunlock Creek, and at 6:30 p.m. at Nanticoke First, 267 E. Main St., Nanticoke. All COVID guidelines will be followed. Call the charge office at 570-258-2822 for information.

Luzerne County Child Advocacy Center is seeking sponsors to sponsor pinwheels for its pinwheel fundraiser. Pinwheel sponsorships are $25. The pinwheels are ‘planted’ on the Luzerne County Courthouse lawn to draw attention to the issue of child abuse and raise funds to assist the advocacy center in its efforts to assist victims of child abuse in the local community. Mountain Top

The Rotary Club of Mountain Top will hold a virtual Designer Purse Bingo via ZOOM from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14. The event is limited to the first 100 participants to purchase tickets at $30. This includes one book of 10 games of regular bingo. Payments can be made by PayPal ([email protected]), or Venmo using the family and friends option. Tickets will then be mailed out to participants. Nanticoke area

West Side Playground, 389 W. Grand St., Nanticoke, will hold its bi-monthly bingo Tuesday, Feb. 16. There will be cash prizes and two magic numbers. Masks must be worn and social distancing will be observed. There will be food, refreshments and door prizes. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Games start at 6. Facility is non smoking. The 2021 Newport Twp. refuse and recycling fee is now being collected during the month of February at the base rate of $240 per unit. Payment can be either mailed in to the municipal building at 351 E. Kirmar Ave., Nanticoke, PA 18634, or deposited in the drop box located on the front of the building. Payment will be processed and the refuse sticker will be mailed. The base rate remains in effect until March 1. After March 1, the rate will be $275 per unit. The Greater Nanticoke Area Midweek Lenten Service schedule has been announced by the pastor of the Mount Moriah Methodist Charge, Calvary, McKendree, Nanticoke and Oakdale Methodist churches. Services are at noon on the following dates: Feb. 24, March 3, 10, 17 and 31, Nanticoke First (take home lunch available after service); March 24, St. John’s Lutheran, East State Street. All COVID precautions and regulations will be followed. All services will also be available on Mount Moriah’s Facebook page.

Wilkes-Barre area

The Plains Twp. administrative office and DPW will be closed Monday, Feb. 15, in observance of the Presidents Day holiday. Residents with a Monday garbage pick-up will have their garbage picked up on Tuesday, Feb. 16. All other schedules will remain the same.

A spring craft show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 6 at the Wilkes-Barre Twp. Fire Hall, 150 Watson St., Wilkes-Barre Twp. There will be a 50/50 raffle to benefit Officer Brian Bouton of the Wilkes-Barre Twp. Police Department. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase by Steagles Bar.

Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 401 E. Main St., Miners Mills, Wilkes-Barre, will hold a potato pancake/clam chowder sale Feb. 17, 19, 26 and March 5, 12, and 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Chowder will be served cold for take out only. Pancakes are $1 each. Clam chowder is $6 for a 12 ounce bowl and $12 per quart. Advance orders are not necessary.

Wyoming Area

St. Barbara Parish, Exeter, will hold a Lenten food sale this year. The sale will be held in the parish center, rear 212 Memorial St., Exeter. Patrons should note some changes due to COVID-19 and CDC regulations. The sale will be take out only and will be held on the following dates, and feature the listed food items: Ash Wednesday, Feb. 17, noon to 6 p.m., potato pancakes only; every Friday during Lent from 3 to 6 p.m., full menu. The full menu includes potato pancakes, $1 each; pierogi, six for $5; and halushki, $6 per quart. Orders are cash only. No pre orders will be accepted. Order at the door. There will be no raffles or tickets sold this year. The hall has been rearranged for seating (while patrons wait for their order). The sale will not be held in the event of a snowstorm. Face masks must be worn and a six foot distance between patrons must be maintained at all times.
