College Basketball Betting Preview: Miami Hurricanes vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021

Two of the bottom four teams in the ACC will hook up for a Sunday matinee as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables. This is the first game the Hurricanes have played since getting blasted on the road at Syracuse last Tuesday. They enter the game with a 6-7 overall record with a 2-6 mark in league play.

Notre Dame is currently 4-8 on the season and 1-5 in the ACC with their sole win coming at the expense of the lowly Boston College Eagles.

The game is scheduled for a 6:00 PM EST with the Hurricanes favored at home by 2.5 points. The total is set at 142.5 points.

More than a little fight in these Irish

Notre Dame is not your typical 4-8 college basketball team. While their record suggests that they are pushovers, Mike Brey’s group has played one of the toughest schedules in the country and gave every opponent a hell of a run.

The backcourt of Cormac Ryan, Prentiss Hubb and Dane Goodwin is effective offensively and could be considered one of the best in the ACC. The problem is that they just don’t play any sort of defense this season in South Bend. The Irish currently rank 199th in the nation in adjusted defensive efficiency according to Kenpom. According to Haslametrics, they are even worse, ranking 241st.

Notre Dame is 1-7 straight up this season as the dog and just 3-8 against the spread. The Irish’s margin of victory is currently -3.4 points per game on the season. Their totals have hit the over in seven of their eleven games this season.

Sometimes a Hurricane, sometimes a drizzle

The Miami Hurricanes are one of the most difficult teams in the ACC to figure out. They have a road victory over North Carolina State but also a home loss to Florida Gulf Coast. They took down Louisville four days after they lost to Boston College by 22 points in Chestnut Hill.

The one thing that is never in doubt is the talent that Miami has on its roster. Even without Chris Lykes, Miami still boast a nice stable of talented guards and wings. Isaiah Wong has really stepped up in Lykes’ absence and led the ‘Canes to the win over Louisville with 30 points. Harlond Beverly hasn’t scored the ball as anticipated but he has shown that he has a tremendously all-around game that will only get better with time.

Miami will again be without Lykes on Sunday. According to a 247sports article this week, he is still “ailing”.

The Hurricanes are 7-6 against the spread on the season and 5-4 ATS at home. As the favorite they are 3-2 straight up on the season. The total has gone under in seven of their 13 games this season.

Notre Dame vs Miami (FL) (-2.5) Total: 142.5 points

Bovada has the Hurricanes favored at home by 2.5 points, which has grown from one. Miami is juiced on the moneyline at -145 while Notre Dame is getting some respect at +125 straight up.

The Pick

Even with Nate Lazsewski having the season he is having for Notre Dame, it’s incredibly difficult to trust this Irish team on the road. Miami being so unpredictable doesn’t make their side any more appealing. At the end of the day you just have to put your trust in the home team and hope for the best. Hurricanes will cover.
