It feels like the Kentucky Derby was only yesterday but we’re just a little over two weeks away from the Preakness Stakes – the final jewel in this year’s topsy-turvy American Triple Crown Series. The Preakness typically stands as the middle jewel in the Triple Crown in between the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes but with the COVID19 pandemic shaking things up, it will stand as a potential showdown between our Belmont Stakes winner – Tiz The Law and Kentucky Derby winner, Authentic. Let’s take a closer look at some of the top contenders we’re likely to see in the starting gate in two weeks.
Authentic – Our Kentucky Derby winner has won 5 of 6 starts and cruises into the Preakness on the heels of an emphatic Derby win where he denied the favorite – Tiz the Law turning for home and left that one reeling.
Tiz The Law – Our Belmont Stakes winner, Travers winner and Kentucky Derby favorite and runner up was denied a chance at a Triple Crown bid by Authentic in the Derby. He will be out for revenge in the Preakness. There was some word that his trainer, Barkley Tagg wanted to withhold him from the Preakness and give him a break with an eye on the Breeders Cup in November.
Mr. Big News – third place finisher in the Kentucky Derby was a last second entrant and shocked the world with his closing kick to finish third to Authentic and Tiz the Law. Sired by Giant’s Causeway, he is bred to run all day and he should be a fresh horse for the Preakness with only one start since April.
NY Traffic – Finished in 8th place in the Kentucky Derby but was a diminishing nose away from defeating Authentic in his start before that in the Haskell Stakes. NY Traffic should benefit from Pimlico’s tighter turns and will likely be on or near the pace.
Art Collector – Our Blue Grass and Ellis Park Derby winner missed the Kentucky Derby due to a minor foot issue. He was expected to be the second choice to Tiz the Law prior to his defection and has done little wrong this year. He’s an interesting selection here as he’ll be fresher than Authentic or Tiz the Law who just slugged it out three weeks ago in the Derby.
King Guillermo – Tampa Bay Derby winner and Arkansas Derby runner up scratched from the Kentucky Derby with a fever and is expected to help press the pace that will likely be set by Authentic again. When he scratched from the Derby it gave Authentic a much easier time on the lead. The Preakness will likely have much different dynamics at play.
Thousand Words – Winner of three stakes races leading up to the Derby actually flipped over in the paddock with 20 minutes to derby. Unscathed, he will give trainer Bob Baffert even more ammunition besides Authentic in his Preakness arsenal.
Dr. Post – Disappointed most recently as the favorite in the Jim Dandy, Dr. Post runs for trainer Todd Pletcher who has outstanding overall numbers but tends to struggle in Triple Crown races. His odds will be generous and these are dangerous connections to discount the chances of.
Pneumatic – ran 4th to Tiz The Law in the Belmont Stakes and returned to CRUSH the field in the Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth after that. The field that day wasn’t anything special but he’s coming into this race fresh for dangerous connections.
